Chicago Residents Appeal to City Panel

CHICAGO - Angry residents from the Lakeview and Roscoe Village area went before the city's Zoning Board on Friday to try to close an adult store that recently opened in their neighborhood.

Residents told CBS2 News here that they hope to appeal the city’s decision allowing the Pleasure Chest to open at Newport and Lincoln avenues.

Those going before the board argued that the city should not have granted a retail permit to the business because it sells sexually explicit material, including X-rated books, videos and other adult novelties.

But store owner Brian Richardson said he has the right to operate his business, which recently moved from a small storefront on Broadway, near Belmont Avenue to the new site.

Last June, when residents also complained about the proposal, zoning board member Ted Matlak said there were no legal grounds to prevent the business from opening.

The board said it would review the evidence gathered during the hearing and make a decision at a later date.
