Unzipped Sees No Recession

LOS ANGELES - Unzipped Media's consumer titles Men and Freshmen saw steady increases in bookstore sales through the fourth quarter of 2008, the company said Wednesday.

"Sales of the January issues of both Men and Freshmen show the power behind these titles," said publisher Dustin Tyner. "In spite of these uncertain economic times, the Unzipped Media brands continue to thrive through growing subscription rates and from bookstore sales."

The January 2009 issue of Men, featuring Man of the Year Reese Rideout, proved the best-selling issue of the past two years at Barnes & Noble. The magazine enjoyed a 45-percent sell-through rate, the highest since the March 2007 issue, Tyner said.

December also proved a strong sales month for Freshmen, which had its best month on the racks since the June 2007 issue. Featuring cover model Trent Davis, the January 2009 Freshmen also exhibited a 45-percent sell-through rate, the best in more than two years, Tyner said.

Unzipped also continues to post solid results, he added. The October 2008 edition, with Johnny Hazzard on the cover, sold more copies than any other issue in two years. Hazzard now serves as a video blogger for the magazine's website.

For 2009, Unzipped Media added its titles to more than 350 newsstands across the country, Waldenbooks among them.
