TLAGay.com Prepares to Award Gaybies

PHILADELPHIA—With the annual awards season in full swing, TLAGay.com has mounted a new effort to recognize the best LGBT work in mainstream entertainment. The Gaybies are expected to become an annual presentation honoring works in categories like Best Openly Gay Actor in a Film or TV Series, Best Openly Gay Filmmaker and Best Gay Comic.

“While there are countless award shows that attempt to honor the best work of writers, filmmakers and performers in their respective fields, there are far too few organizations that single out the best gay-themed work of each given year,” an announcement at the website states. “That is exactly why TLAgay.com is proud to present the 2010 TLA Gaybies.”

Nominees in each of 18 categories were selected by TLA staff and include both familiar and not-so-familiar works and artists. The public is invited to vote for the winners, which will be announced April 15.

“Voting is open to everyone,” the website statement notes. “There is no limit on the number of votes you may cast. In other words, to quote Huey Long, ‘Vote early and often.’”

Though the awards represent a serious effort to recognize exceptional work, the TLAGay.com staff obviously has approached the process with tongues firmly planted in cheeks.

“Categories are subject to change based on no predefined set of criteria or rationale that will make sense to anyone other than us,” reads one caveat. In addition, “Losers can petition for a recount by contacting TLAgay.com via any communication method they choose. Results may vary depending on a variety of stimuli presented forthwith.”
