As a queer female filmmaker inspired by gay pornography and '70s cinema, Houston made a name for herself directing beautifully shot porn from a lesbian perspective. With Heavenly Spire, Houston turns her eye to the men, in a personal project exploring masculine desire and sensuality, and how it manifests within different bodies. The result is a rare collection of artistic, male-focused pornography.
Heavenly Spire has given Houston an outlet to explore her attraction and curiosity about masculinity. “Heavenly Spire is a personal project for me," she said. "Accepting my own masculinity has allowed me to feel okay about my desire for masculine people. Exploring it in film lets me look at male bodies the way I want to.” Accepting the award for "Honoured Website" at the Feminist Porn Awards in Toronto, Houston dedicated the project to “all feminists who love cock.”
Heavenly Spire includes coupled gay scenes as well as solo scenes by straight men—a rarity. The project openly views the masculinity of diverse bodies, including trans and non-binary models. Performers intimately describe their sexual identities, bringing a range of diverse voices and male body images not often expressed in pornography.
"Shine Louise Houston is one of the most influential, groundbreaking and talented queer filmmakers of this century,” stated feminist porn director Tristan Taormino. Advocating that women watch gay porn, Taormino enthusiastically took note of Heavenly Spire, commenting: “It features a group of ethnically-diverse models and couples, genuine chemistry, and Houston’s signature stunning cinematography.”
