LOS ANGELES - Regent Media, parent company of gay cable network here! Networks, has completed acquisition of PlanetOut's publishing division. Properties included in the deal are PlanetOut's two flagship magazine brands, The Advocate and Out. In addition, Regent now owns gay porn publishing house Specialty Publications and its magazines Unzipped, Men and Freshmen; The Out Traveler; Alyson Books; HIV Plus; and Gaywired Media properties including SheWired and GaySports, as well as all corresponding websites.
"Regent Media now owns the best-known and most respected brands in the gay and lesbian marketplace," a prepared statement from Regent Media said. "Our brands signify the highest quality content for the LGBT community via television, magazines, books and the Web. These seminal properties will continue to document and to enrich the culture and history of our nation."
Video news broadcasts have been added to The Advocate's website, and to inaugurate that feature, the magazine's news team is covering the Democratic National Convention. The Advocate's DNC news team includes veteran broadcast journalist James Hattori, as well as The Advocate news editors Kerry Eleveld and Sean Kennedy. Hattori is best known for his work as a senior correspondent with CBS, NBC and CNN.
"Advocate.com will proudly provide a unique perspective on the events of the DNC," said The Advocate editor in chief Jon Barrett. "No other organization can serve our community with such an extraordinary level of resources and experience. Simply put, we are the best team in gay news."
Regent Media chairman Stephen P. Jarchow and president Paul Colichman jointly supervise the divisions of the company, which have produced such films as the Academy Award-winning Gods & Monsters and Academy Award-nominated Tom & Viv. The media conglomerate's original television series include Dante's Cove, Paradise Falls, The Lair, The Donald Strachey Mysteries and The DL Chronicles, in addition to the annual Ribbon of Hope Celebration.
