FLUSHING, N.Y. - On Top Productions, a producer of hardcore gay wrestling titles, has severed its distribution relationship with Hustler and will distribute its own titles, the company's president said Wednesday.
"It was a mutual decision," Barry David said. "Nobody knows our product as well as we do."
David, formerly a "legitimate actor" in New York and Hollywood, began producing adult content in 1997, after an acquaintance suggested the two of them partner up in order to grab a share of what the friend said was a $20-million-a-year business: erotic wrestling. The partnership didn't last, but David's interest in erotica did. The rest, as they say, is history.
Although he admitted his first titles "you couldn't give away," lately the movies David writes, directs and produces have been doing well, he noted.
"They always start with wrestling that leads to hardcore sex," he told GAYVN.com in a profound New York accent that, at least in part, explained his mainstream typecasting as what he called "New York tough guys and stupid people."
David attributes part of On Top's success to mixing gay archetypes in his productions. There's no doubt most of the studio's movies include hairy, muscular, über-masculine men ("Guys like me," David noted with a chuckle), but a "skinny guy" gets thrown into the mix frequently. If nothing else, the technique provides a comic twist to the plot, he noted. In one film, for example, a brawl between two big bruisers is interrupted by a little guy. David still chuckles when he relates the tale.
"Our motto: If you lose, you're fucked," he noted.
That seems to fit well with the company's tag line: "We're On Top. Get used to it."
Of the several dozen videos On Top has produced since 1997, David didn't even hesitate when he said the recently released Hard Cock Hotel 3 was his favorite. However, he noted, he still maintains a fondness for Cowboy Wrestling, On Top's first title. The studio will re-release the originally-on-VHS movie on DVD in September.
As its name implies, Cowboy Wrestling is "cowboys wrestling in a barn with cowboy hats," David said. "The gay market loves cowboys."
Most of On Top's titles feature performers who are unknown in the gay industry, although Joe Strong made one movie for the studio (Blue Collar Battles 2). David said he's always looking for new talent, not only for On Top, but also for his other two companies, Double D Studios and Nasty Ladies Productions. The former produces hardcore videos starring busty girls, and the latter specializes in hardcore girl-girl wrestling.
On Top Productions titles may be ordered by calling (888) 286-7626, faxing (718) 358-2029 or emailing.
"We at On Top look forward to building a great relationship with all our new customers," David said.
