Jon Barrett Named Editor in Chief of ‘The Advocate'

LOS ANGELES - Jon Barrett has been named editor in chief of The Advocate, a 40-year-old newsmagazine covering the LGBT community. The magazine reports twice monthly on news, politics, business, medical issues, and arts and entertainment.

here! Networks, a division of Regent Entertainment, purchased the magazine and other properties from PlanetOut Inc. earlier this year.

With more than 15 years of experience as a journalist, Barrett most recently served as the features director for O at Home, an Oprah magazine published by Hearst. Previously, he was a senior editor for both Condé Nast's Cargo and Time Inc.'s Real Simple. From 1997-2003, Barrett was a senior editor at The Advocate. Prior to that, he served as an assistant editor at Chicago's Windy City Times.

His writing credits also include a book, Hero of Flight 93: Mark Bingham (Alyson Books, 2002). In addition, he collaborated with Evan Wolfson on Why Marriage Matters (Simon & Schuster, 2004).

Barrett replaces Anne Stockwell, who resigned to pursue other opportunities after 15 years on the magazine's staff. She will continue to write for The Advocate and its sister publications.
