MIAMI BEACH, Fla.—When he left for Australia late last year, gay adult performer-producer-director Collin O’Neal intended to say only three weeks—just long enough to sign a few contracts and film “blond surfers on the beach” for his World of Men DVD line.
However, “about 10 days after I landed, I had to extend my trip for another month,” he said. “The local gay and straight media found out I was there and insisted I stay longer for radio interviews and other promotional opportunities.”
One of the most interesting on-air experiences, he said, was his chat with Dean Beck on Melbourne’s gay radio station, Joy 94.9. Beck was fascinated by the collision of O’Neal’s personal and professional lives after O’Neal received significant attention for an iReport posted to CNN’s website.
“Dean had no idea about the life stories I had up my sleeves,” O’Neal said. “I shocked him quite a few times during the interview, so much so that he thought the interview needed to be aired on Australian Public Radio.”
O’Neal’s filming aspirations changed, too. In addition to the blond surfers he originally intended to lens, his trek through Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth and Darwin uncovered rough, masculine, muscular types who were more similar to the men in other World of Men titles.
“The first time I ever went to Australia, 17 years ago, was to visit a friend near Geraldton, about a two-hour drive north of Perth,” O’Neal said. “I really wanted to go back to Perth, and then I had always dreamed of visiting Darwin, so that is where I took my vacation. I was very much surprised by the city and its surroundings.”
In fact, he was so surprised—and turned on—that he decided to include his first on-camera bottoming scene in World of Men: Australia.
“There are a lot of surprises with this DVD,” he said. “First, I had to go to Australia to add a Lebanese guy to my collection of men. Then, I decided I would let the Lebanese guy top me for the DVD release.”
