California Event to Benefit Gay, Lesbian Emergency Workers

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - Party in the Desert, an annual fund-raiser to support the efforts of benevolent organization Protect and Defend, will take place July 25-27 in Palm Springs. Proceeds from the event will be used to maintain the nonprofit organization's mission of providing social and peer support, death benefits and legal counsel for gay and lesbian peace officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, public safety employees, service members (active duty and reserve) and veterans.

PID is expected to attract more than 130 cops, firefighters, public safety employees, military members and their friends and family from more than 18 states and Australia. The event will be in a secured, private area, a PAD spokesperson said.

For the first time, PID will be hosted in conjunction with Palm Springs Summer Splash. Attendees at both events plan to visit local bars and clubs including Hunters, Toucans and Mixies Boy Bar. The Disorderly Conduct Party will be July 26 starting at 9 p.m. at Mixies.

A second summer fund-raiser is scheduled for Aug. 2 at the Silver Fox Bar in Long Beach, Calif.

Protect and Defend was founded in 2006. It has a small but united membership of 120 people in 18 U.S. states. Inquiries about membership are welcome and can be accomplished at the organization's website.
