Business Profile | Video | Pacific Sun Entertainment

The new managers at Pacific Sun Entertainment will be the first to admit they have limited experience in the adult industry. But in the fast-evolving technical landscape that is shaping the porn world, that's actually a good thing.

Meet new president Sam (also the owner) and new CEO Pritam. Both come from strong technical backgrounds, having graduated from premier engineering schools and worked in major high-tech companies. They say their strong technical background will help Pacific Sun as the content distribution market shifts from traditional to new media outlets.

"As recently stated by many - including the CEO of Vivid - it is the ‘new media' experts who are going to capitalize on this industry moving forward, as opposed to many who try to cling to the old media - mainly DVD - which is declining rapidly," Pritam says.

Industry veteran Motti Green - who started the company in 1998, utilizing the skills of famed directors like Michael Zen, Thor Stephans and Paul Barresi to help build the brand, and also injected a successful European flair through the works of Csaba Borbely and Tom Bradford - will continue to have an advisory role and help from the sidelines. Green stepped away from active management toward the end of 2007 as the new managers took over.

Pritam notes that they have aggressive plans to rejuvenate the company, including an increase in production and the addition of new lines, and they will also focus on adapting to new media by seeking partnerships with VOD sites, cell phone companies and TV channels. They will also develop their own retail website to sell direct to consumers through methods like download-to-own and download-to-rent. The duo also hopes to capitalize on the brand name as Pacific Sun plans to enter the sex toy/novelty market this year.

"Pacific Sun is not a small niche," Pritam says. "It is as broad as the Pacific Ocean with a future as bright as the sun. It has always focused on all aspects and genres of gay adult entertainment, trying to satisfy customers of varying tastes. Building from its strong background in the gay market, it is looking to expand rapidly into other markets such as the transsexual, bisexual and even straight markets.

Pacific Sun will not focus on any single type of film," he continues. "However, it will try to address several price-quality options. While the Renegade brand is known for affordability, the best-quality films are released under the Pacific Sun brand. Besides, we just introduced the new brand, Phallus, which will feature affordable-quality domestic and foreign films. As we get more international films, perhaps including Asian and animation, we are considering introducing the Pacific Sun International brand."

Pacific Sun acquired several European titles for the Phallus line and will be releasing them over the next several months. "We also just finished an interracial movie filmed in Florida. We are working with Paul Barresi on a bear film. We are working with several other producers. Our goal is to release on average one movie every week. This is on top of the several lines we exclusively distribute such as Ridgeline Films and Max Entertainment. We are working on enhancing our exclusive distribution portfolio."

In addition, Pacific Sun will push to increase international sales, largely facilitated by technological advances through new media channels that help circumvent barriers caused by international boundaries.

"The balance between American and European [product] will depend on consumer demand and ROI analysis. With the euro being strong, the cost of producing in Europe is not that economical; however, pockets of opportunity always exist," Pritam says. "With many worldwide changes in personal freedoms, we are seeing more demand for American product in foreign markets as well as more hardcore entertainment being created in other countries becoming available to the American market."

Pritam adds that they are in the process of developing and finalizing their wholesale website. They will then drastically revamp the retail site starting with VOD and will soon provide download-to-own, download-to-rent, pay site and online DVD purchase options. "We also have plans to massively market our websites. A large part of our Web development will be outsourced to Asia. We also plan to be the content provider in leading VOD websites."

Pritam notes that Pacific Sun will strive to distribute its content in whatever way possible - and in whatever form demanded - by technology.

"We expect to be at the forefront of technology for adult content distribution. We will target all distribution forms including, but not limited to, hotel channels, cable TV, satellite TV, IPTV, Internet, cell phone, iPhones, iPods...whatever media available. This may involve adapting our content for some kinds of media," he says. "For example, some TV stations and cell phones only allow softcore. We are considering developing softcore versions of some of our movies to take advantage of distribution in those channels."
