SAN FRANCISCO - After months of preparation, Raging Stallion performer Antonio Biaggi has opened Eco Boutique, an earth-friendly home and gift store in the heart of San Francisco's Castro District.
Bearing the motto "The home and gift store that cares about the planet," Eco Boutique's entire inventory is made from recycled, repurposed, organic or sustainable materials.
"The store's mission is to sell eco-responsible items at the best possible price," Biaggi explained. "I was tired of my friends relating that they wanted to shop more responsibly but always resented the dramatically higher cost. More people are searching for eco-friendly products that are both green and affordable.
"Consumers want to make responsible choices at the same price, or close to the same price, of non-green items they would usually choose. My goal is to make the entire inventory at Eco Boutique as affordable as possible."
The store's gift items include jewelry, soy candles, decorative items, picture frames, recycled paper journals and desk accessories.
"We also have a good selection of home products including luxury bamboo fiber towels, linens and bathrobes, organic cotton pillows and throws, glassware and an entire line of bamboo kitchen accessories," Biaggi noted. "We sell a large selection of green products for everyday use including organic bath products and soaps, and earth-friendly cleaning supplies."
Biaggi said the inventory that excites him the most is a large selection of artists' works, all constructed from recycled and organic materials. Many of the items are one-of-a-kind, both unique and beautiful, and their artisan appeal gives the shop a gallery atmosphere.
"We have found clocks made of recycled bicycle parts; fused glass platters made with recycled glass; a selection of bags made from various materials such as recycled vinyl banners, hemp, recycled rubber and organic cotton; and candy bowls made of vintage vinyl records," he revealed.
He also said "every item has a story. For example, we have found a wonderful floor mop that is made with recycled fibers constructed by individuals with learning disabilities. This is one of the greatest elements of the store. We get to engage in a dialogue with customers about why these products are important and what makes them special. People will want to visit periodically to see what out-of-the-ordinary things have been added."
Eco Boutique is open Tuesday through Sunday at 4035 18th St. and can be reached by phone at (415) 252-0898.
