15th Annual SF Drag King Contest Slated for Aug. 20

SAN FRANCISCO—Jane Wiedlin, guitarist for The Go-Go’s, will serve as mad mistress of ceremonies for San Francisco’s 15th annual Drag King Contest. The event, themed “Sinners and Salivation,” is scheduled to take place Aug. 20 at DNA Lounge.

Produced by DragStrip Productions, the hedonistic celebration of “Sex, Drag and Rock & Roll” is a fundraising benefit for Pets Are Wonderful Support (PAWS), a volunteer-based organization serving the comprehensive needs of companion animals for low-income persons with HIV-AIDS and other disabling illnesses.

Considered “one of the most boisterous parties of the year” by The San Francisco Chronicle, it’s also “sexy, campy, dragalicious, professionally executed and full of talent” according to the San Francisco Bay Times and “impressive, varied and wild” according to The Onion.

“The Drag King Contest is a mash-up of the Miss America Pageant, American Idol, Halloween and a monster truck show,” impresario and co-emcee Fudgie Frottage said.

Co-emcee Sister Roma added, “Good Friday? This is going to be a fucking fantastic Friday, because I am anticipating multiple second comings. This is San Francisco’s wildest, all-encompassing and interactive, ritualistic worshiping of loud, extreme, altogether awesome Communion-meets-Bar Mitzvah of pure excitement, energy and High Holy Day righteous hotness. This year the Kings will be so divine, my body and soul will need salivation.”

The 2010 event will showcase 2009 winner Delicio Del Toro, cabaret chanteuse extraordinaire The Indra, BurlyQ Beauties Diamond Daggers, the raucous rock band PEPPERSPRAY! and rappers The Momma’s Boyz.

The contestants, however, are the true stars of the show. Each is judged on talent, creativity, studliness, sex appeal, originality, humor, make-up/facial hair and fashion by the illustrious panel of nationally known celebrity judges, including drag king titleholders Rusty Hips and Jay Walker, Simone DeLaGetto of Harlem Shake Burlesque, and former Miss Trannyshack Anna Conda.

General-admission tickets are $20; VIP tickets are $35. Doors open at 8 p.m.
