Is Erotica USA not hot enough for the City By The Bay? Apparently the show, which raised New York Mayor Rudolph (The Blue-Nosed Reindeer) Giuliani's collar temperature, has promoters worried about precisely that. "The problem in San Francisco is, we consider the town so blasé about these types of things, that this may not be enough to titillate the press or create controversy," says a partner in the show, Fred Bari. The show hits the U.S. following sellout shows in London, and Giuliani's ire in New York, where for four days the state-owned Javits Center hosted the show featuring booths full of latex attire, dildos, porn videos, tattoos, and erotic art [AVN's coverage is detailed in the June, 1999 ish]. But in San Francisco, the same show, to be held at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, is seen as comparatively tame. For one thing, public health workers are seizing the chance for an excuse to step up safe sex education. For another thing, Erotica USA may call itself the world's largest erotic trade and consumer show, with porn star Candida Royalle set to be one of the highlights, but Playboy had no interest, apparently, in exhibiting at the show - because it's too tame. The Playboy Channel, however, will cover the event.
WAUKESHA, Wis. - Elvis is going to do the jailhouse rock for underage sex. Well, not the King of Rock and Roll per se, but one of his kazillion impersonators. Bobby Doty of Elmhurst, Ill., is going to the Purple Gang for 20 years for having sex while age 24 with a 15-year-old girl he claimed he planned to marry with her mother's approval in Memphis. Doty claimed consensual sex and mother's approval, but both the girl and her mother told a judge Doty duped them, promising them fame and fortune if they went with him and loaned him money. Instead, they testified, they got Heartbreak Hotel: physical and emotional abuse, financial loss, threats, and an impoverished lifestyle.
LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Tippecanoe County once lent its name to battle hero William Henry Harrison's Presidential campaign - "Tippecanoe and Tyler, Too." Now it's getting attention over an exotic dancer who lives there and likes to practice routines in her yard while scantily dressed - and it has neighbors steamed. Enough so, authorities say, that they've complained, especially about Kim Mattes' allegedly doing some practicing while school buses pass by. And it doesn't exactly help that her otherwise nondescript home sits right across from an Indiana State Police barracks. Complaints were expected at an April 4 county commissioners meeting, where one commissioner, John Knochel, said he'd back an ordinance to stop Mattes' practicing and similar behavior. She's been at it for two years, according to the Lafayette Journal and Courier, but it came to a head when she installed a pole in her yard for some of her routines, similar to her club routines. Police say she's within her rights as long as she doesn't cross the line to outright violation of Indiana public indecency law.
