SAN FRANCISCO - Good Vibrations will help raise awareness and emphasize the importance of masturbation by celebrating its 13th annual National Masturbation Month.

The company created National Masturbation Month in 1995, after Surgeon General Joycelyn Elders was fired for saying masturbation is "perhaps something that should be taught" as part of young people's sexual education.

"Masturbation is an elemental component of healthy, happy sexuality for so many people," said Dr. Carol Queen, an author, activist, and staff sexologist for Good Vibrations.

As part of this year's celebration, Queen and Dr. Robert Lawrence will host the free "Ask the Doctors: Masturbation" event at 6:30 p.m. May 22 at Good Vibrations' 603 Valencia St. location.

Queen and Lawrence will discuss the evolution of masturbation, different cultural perceptions of the practice, "how to" techniques, and toys, Queen said.

National Masturbation Month also includes the "Come for a Cause," a "masturbate-a-thon" sponsored by Good Vibrations and presented by the Center for Sex and Culture.
