Make the popcorn, put the cat out and turn off the lights. This is essential adult video.

Nostalgia tapes of the old blue movies have been on the market for a while (Old Borrowed and Stag, Old-Time Blue, etc). Yet they remain collections, not documentaries. In the case of A History Of The Blue Movie, the development of stag films is explained. This is not a random collection of whatever was on the editing room floor. Alex De Renzy carefully choose fun, erotic and informative stage that date back to 1915. Through 1975, he traces the growth of blue movies.

Much concern has been taken to present these movies in their full length. The narration, while informative, is minimal. We are told of the dates, settings and sexual attitudes of the period. Again, the music is chosen to enhance, not interfere. Everything else comes from the films themselves. Thus DeRenzy's sparse direction allows for the erotic, the fun and the bizarre of the blue to come through.

Action abounds in History of The Blue Movie, with full eroticism found in even the earliest stag. A Free Ride, from 1915, depicts two girls who hitchhike a car ride, take a quick pee and a picnic of an orgy with the driver. Other highlights include The Janitor and A Nun's Story, which is very passionate.

The arcade peeps presented here must have thrust male frustration levels to new heights. These brief seconds of titillation are funny, but show us the moral mood of the period. And The Masseuse, from the Victorian early '60's, is a funny spoof of a blue film.

You cannot help but laugh at some of the sexual attitudes presented here. The variety of movies is wide and A History of the Blue Movie is recommended for any adult collection.
