Director Paul G. Vatelli has become a consistent, good, workmanlike director over the last year because he has narrowed his focus, concentrating on just a few main characters in his films and treating them like real live people.  His recent Sex Star was wonderful because as a little film, it did more for realistic sensuality than many of last year’s bigger, more ambitious projects that seemed to get lost in their own huge aspirations.

Coming Together succeeds on much the same level.  The simple plot, concerning frustrated housewife Colleen Brennan’s sexual coming-of-age while husband Herschel Savage goes away for a cheating weekend with his girlfriend, blends believable situations with plain, good old-fashioned sex.

Brennan, Savage and Kimberly Carson, as Brennan’s old college roommate/savior all turn in superb performances, while Carson’s swarmy hot tub and sofa scene with Greg Ruffner proves very erotic.  The inevitable lesbian sequence with the attractive Carson and Colleen Brennan (Lisa DeLeeuw’s redheaded heir apparent) is also handled subtly and with passion.

As a sex film, we’ve seen more overall erotic movies. But Coming Together, since it deftly combines plot and hardcore, automatically becomes one of those elusive recommendations for all adults without special considerations for kinky or bizarre tastes.
