Ambitious and pretentious, Dark Angel attempts to dramatize a novel about a man named Lee who becomes obsessed with a beautiful fantasy woman who keeps appearing for him and vanishing when he approaches. He goes down a dark path of sexual torment and finally sells his soul to make love to her. After their night together he is left on a beach, soulless and sucking on her red spike-heeled shoe.

On the upside there are hordes of good-looking women in the cast and enough attractive men, although in every scene the girls outnumber the guys and outwork them in the sex play. The first scene has Lee (Jamie Gillis), our tormented hero and narrator, in his limo being serviced by two lovelies. In his fall from grace, he sneaks into an insane asylum and gets attacked by five sex-crazed wild women. His friends try to distract him from his obsession by staging a dramatic rape in a warehouse, starkly lit by the limo's headlights. There is an old-fashioned California orgy including a hot-tub scene and even a whipping scene followed by an orgy of guys in black and girls in collars and studs. The sex is intense, though completely male dominated throughout.

Dark Angel is well shot with luxurious settings and eerie sound effects, but the sex scenes are badly overdubbed with the "oohs" and "aahs" not in synch with the action. The cutting of the orgy scene is a little off too, with reaction shots not in the same motion as the action they should be reflecting. Although Dark Angel doesn't always work, credit goes to the cinematographer, acting and art direction—all good.
