Burlesque in Harlem is a fascinating spectacle to watch but, in some instances, a bit of a pain-in-the-ass to listen to. Age, of course, has a lot to do with this, but where the soundtrack (blips, crackles and splices) especially lets us down is during a classic Pigmeat Markham comedy sketch. Not that the comedy is hilarious by any stretch of the imagination, (it would take CIA enhancing equipment to render an accurate transcription of what is said), but it would add infinitely to its appreciation. Pigmeat plays a "specialist" for a love-making bureau, and is assigned to teach a woman how to make love to her husband. One can only suspect that the dialogue is thoroughly ribald for its generation.

As one might suspect from the age and fashion of this show, the male performers sport enough Crisco in their hair to fuel all the KFC fryers in New York City, and the ladies who sing the blues may have inspired William 'The Refrigerator" Perry.

Kidding aside, the entertainment herein is a vital part of Americana and affords a limited a rare opportunity to see black exotics at work. A truly exceptional find.
