Japanese women have a look and manner so completely different from the industry mainstays, the effect is instantly appreciable.

Containing only three explicit scenes, this near-classic captures a kind of social intercourse rarely seen in most traditional American or European offerings – lovemaking, in its deepest sense. There's passion aplenty, and enough genital coverage (sans initial penetration shots) to set one's blood boiling, but the style in which these couples engage in sex reads as the dictionary definition of spontaneity itself.

Curiously, Old Lover appears to be well-rehearsed, in the most craftsmanlike sense. Fresh locations and simple/elegant videography bring a subtle element of "real" filmmaking to the production. The subtitles, attempting to convey a scenario of love and abandonment, have lost much from the original translation – but the eroticism is clearly universal.
