Reviews

The sequel to Boot Camp contains what may well be the two best episodes in the series: Kevin Glover's performance as a Marine separated from his lover and the final scene between Vincent Milo and Rick Sands, which uses studio effects to achieve a memorable portrait of two men who would rather make love than war. The pacing and camera work are superior throughout, and Lucas's direction is always on target.

But to the problems of authenticity (in one scene Dany Brown is wearing blue jeans) Lucas adds a new problem with the script: Lowe's letter home, which unified the first feature, are suddenly dropped after the first scene and never reappear. This unexplained development undercuts the story's cohesion and takes away some of its effectiveness as a portrait of men in war. Nonetheless, the series marks a major step forward for Lucas as a director and should be respected for its overall ambition as well as its partial success.
