Reviews

One of the most intricate and probing scripts of the year was written by none other than Gino Colbert, who in the past I've lambasted for confusing plots. This one is clever and has some finesse, showing Colbert as someone who knows how to write as well as direct. The best acting job is done by Chip Daniels who plays an off-beat love-lorn guy who wears a yellow ribbon for his boyfriend missing in action in Desert Storm. (He's great, that is, except for an overly-faked fainting scene.) The faint is caused when suddenly Johnny Rey, the long-lost love, returns with a love letter that was found when his tank was blown up at a Kurdish village (no matter that if this actually happened, he'd probably have been executed on the spot for being gay,) but poor Johnny can't remember who he is – and sometimes he can't remember how to act.

The three-way between Rey, Johnny Rahm and Coy Dekker is notable because it's shot and edited in quick cuts and erotic close-ups. Some of the acting is a bit goofy and some of the production quality is a bit lax but it's also timely, political, romantic, intriguing and sexy. All that and a twist at the end that will have viewers talking about it for a time to come.
