GOD'S COUNTRY – XXXChurch, the anti-porn religious organization responsible for "Pancakes & Porn" and "Pastries & Porn" Sundays, has done itself one better by organizing "National Porn Sunday," to take place in an unknown number of churches nationwide on Sunday, Oct. 7.
The event, which will showcase a 30-minute video on the "dangers" of viewing sexually explicit material, which can be downloaded from the National Porn Sunday website, is being held allegedly to "bring hope to those who are struggling with pornography," according to the site.
"The one undeniable truth that can’t be ignored is the blatant push for all things sexual in our society," writes Pastor Mike Foster of XXXChurch on the site. "PornSunday seeks to drive the conversation about pornography into our churches, families, and lives. PornSunday wants to bring healing and recovery to those struggling with pornography."
XXXChurch has also made a "PornSunday kit" available to participating congregations, consisting of four "Official XXXChurch Recovery Workbooks" aimed at different "porn sufferers" – men, young men, spouses and wives – which will allegedly help them deal with the effects of porn on loved ones and themselves.
To help publicize this and other XXXChurch events, the church has created a 25-foot inflatable blue elephant – an interesting choice, considering which political party also uses the elephant as a symbol – which is supposed to stand for the "elephant in the pew" that nobody talks about; i.e., the problem of "porn addiction" among Christians, which internal church studies suggest has reached epic proportions, with some 40% of clergy and 47% of "Christian families" admitting to having problems with porn.
Of course, "porn addiction" is simply one manifestation of obsessive-compulsive disorder, a psychological condition which has nothing to do with the obsessive person's fixation – which could be porn, hand-washing, or even praying – and can be alleviated with psychological counseling and sometimes the use of psychoactive drugs. That fact, however, does not appear in the XXXChurch video.
It's unclear why Oct. 7 has been chosen for National Porn Sunday, though conspiracy theorists might suggest that XXXChurch is trying to steal a march on various other religious anti-porn groups which will be sponsoring the annual White Ribbon Against Pornography week, which will take place Oct, 27-Nov. 4 this year.
In a recent interview with the New York Times, XXXChurch's Pastor Craig Gross made one good point: "We're not going to shut down the porn industry," Gross said. "So why even try? It's a $13 billion-dollar-a-year industry in the United States. The right-wingers say, 'Let's boycott this, let's all stop doing this.' Well, if the Christians would just stop consuming it, that would put a dent in it."
