NOB HILL, N.M. – A new adult film festival called Pornotopia opened today at the Guild Theatre in Nob Hill, a suburb of Albequerque.
“It’s literally an event where we are highlighting and showcasing independently made, higher quality erotic films on the big screen,” Molly Adler, Pornotopia’s organizer, told KOB News New Mexico. “So many people out there are turned off by the traditional porn or adult films. Pornotopia is the alternative.”
The three-day festival presents what Adler calls “high-brow pornography” and a handful of documentaries about porn. Selections include Annie Sprinkle's HERstory of Porn and Amazing World of Orgasms, S.I.R. Video's dykefest How To Fuck in High Heels, Becky Goldberg's feminist porn doc Hot And Bothered, the BDSM-themed The Pain Game and the '70s XXX revival Disco Dolls in Hot Skin.
The Guild Theater, now primarily an art house cinema, was once a porn theatre in the early 1970s.
“So far, response to the festival has been positive,” Guild owner Peter Conheim told KOB News. “I thinks it’s gonna be terrific. A lot of people have been excited that we are doing this. They have a lot of support in the community.”
The festival is also receiving a good amount of support from the local community.
“I’m open to diversity,” Joe Chavez, manager of the Sachs tattoo parlor, told KOB. “In our industry, we are constantly dealing with the human anatomy, so it’s something that we’re used to and relate to.”
“It’s cool that they have the opportunity if they want to see something like that,” said Albuquerque resident, Renee Garcia. “That it’s out there for them is what Albuquerque is all about.”
