UK Man Faces Jail Time for Pirated DVDs

WALES - A man faces serious jail time for selling pirated DVDs — including both porn and mainstream titles — on the streets of South Wales. According to a recent report, Chinese immigrant Quiang Yi He was caught with more than 2,000 pirated Hollywood DVDs and six porn discs when local authorities raided his house.

This is Yi He's second offense; he was caught with pirated porn DVDs earlier this year. Yi He, who is out on conditional bail, pleaded guilty to one charge under the Obscene Publications Act of possessing pornography showing obscene acts, as well as four additional counts of selling pirated mainstream movies.

Yi He will be sentenced later this month.

Dave Holland, head of the territories trading standards unit, told icWales.co.uk that DVD piracy has now become one of the biggest priorities for his officers. "In the last four to six weeks in Cardiff, we have probably taken possession of 10,000 to 15,000 discs. They range from the latest films in the cinema to the worst pornography involving animals and children," he said.

According to the report, authorities were told that sentencing guidelines for offenders caught more than once with obscene pornography for sale advised they should receive the "full force of the law," which allows sentences of up to a year.

British law defines pornography as anything that "tends to deprave and corrupt."
