Seka Recalls Salad Days of Porn in Autobiography

Still looking much like the 25-year-old starlet of years gone by, the platinum-haired Seka laughs as she recalled her early years in the industry.

“I used to tell people to take a shower and clean yourself up or I’m not going to work with you,” she said.

“They complained, but I was serious. I didn’t want to work with sweaty guys or girls with messy hair.”

Seka’s demand for better hygiene and professionalism from her colleagues became her trademark when she joined the industry, she says of her early days as a new starlet in her new autobiography, “Inside Seka,” scheduled for release this Christmas. She plans to self-publish the book.

Now 52, the still svelte former starlet is a little older and a little wiser, but just as adventurous as ever when it comes to sex, she reveals in her book which she is now completing.

With her premium Web site www.seka.com, the AVN Hall of Famer has joined cyberspace in giving a new generation the chance to see her get down and dirty with porn’s top stars of the late 70s and early 90s.

But when asked about intimate aspects of her life the book will deal with, she simply says, “read the book when it comes out.”

Born Dorothiea Ivonniea Hundley on April 15, 1954 in Radford, Va., Seka was a striking teenager who won several beauty pageants, including “Miss Hopewell High School” and “Miss Southside Virginia.”

After working several jobs, she saved enough to start her own adult bookstore which grew into a chain of seven bookstores around Virginia.

“I had a mind for business and I took advantage of that,” she says.

But given the country’s conservative climate and the stringent obscenity laws, Seka grew tired of battling authorities who tried to shut down her stores and soon sold her interest and moved to Las Vegas and did her first nude magazine layout.

At 5-foot-8 with a slender build and natural breasts, the now platinum-haired beauty became a sensation after moving to Los Angeles to become a porn star using the name Seka, which means “symbol” in the South African Sesotho language.

“I liked porn, but I didn’t like how women were treated. Women had no makeup and their feet were dirty and they had pimples on their butt and their hair was nasty and the producers didn’t care what the women looked like as long as there was a cum shot,” she said.

“I always insisted people took care of how they looked and I think they respected that.”

Having starred in a number of movies like Caballero’s Rockin’ With Seka, Hollywood Video’s Seka's Diary and others, Seka’s fortunes grew with each passing movie.

“She came on the screen and she was like a breath of fresh air,” recalled fellow AVN Hall of Famer and veteran producer-director, Roy Karch.

“She was brand new and fresh and she was into sex and was really the first true superstar of porn.”

Having worked with her in Dracula Sucks, Karch saw what her fans had seen all along about this Southern belle – she was a great beauty and she could perform like seemingly no other porn star had done before.

“She broke the mold. Up until then, we had gorgeous looking women, but she had platinum blond hair and a lithe body that was made for sex.”

But even as her career was on upswing, the realities of porn in the late 70s and early 80s made it a sometimes perilous field of work.

“We had to keep a low profile when we shot. There were police raids all the time and people were thrown in jail,” she recalled.

“I was never on set when people got busted, but it happened a lot and you had to keep locations a secret from everybody.”

Despite the seeming stigma of porn that affected its performers trying to break into mainstream entertainment, Seka found her niche by appearing in a number of Hollywood movies and even appeared on television shows like "Saturday Night Live" and the "Oprah Winfrey Show" in the 1980s.

She even dated comedian Sam Kinison during his heyday in the late 1980s.

Although she would go on performing into the early 1990s, Seka grew disillusioned at the industry's response to the AIDS crisis. She felt health testing should be mandatory and that condoms be required at all shoots.

“But the industry wasn’t ready to do that so I left. It’s too bad more people didn’t agree with me, but I felt that it was a matter of life and death,” she says.

Eventually, she went on to do magazine work with Club magazine with feature layouts along with Internet work through her own Web site and those of others such as AEBN which features her videos.

Today, she’s getting ready to release her 1987 feature Careful, He May Be Watching, remastered on DVD, featuring bonus footage and lots of extras straight from her vault containing the film’s original raw footage, starring Kay Parker, Shanna McCullough and Mike Horner.

The title will be released through its original producer, Video X Pix, in January during the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo.

Meanwhile, Seka, who is single after being divorced twice, continues to make appearances at a variety of activities and events around the country. She is scheduled to appear on June 3 at the Wrestling Reunion IV Convention, 1000 Roosevelt Ave. in Carteret, N.J.

“I’m a huge wrestling fan so I love going to wrestling shows and things like that,” she says.

"I’m just a Southern girl who likes to have fun.”
