Officials Oppose Washington Strip Club’s Relocation

The owners of a strip club are considering moving their cabaret to a location near the city’s downtown area despite local opposition.

The Washington Times is reporting that the owners of Club 55, which opened 10 years ago along K Street, have asked the District to transfer their liquor license to 3350 New York Ave. NE located next to the newspaper building.

Andrea M. Bagwell, a lawyer who represents the club, said the facility would be a “top flight establishment.”

The proposed location would open from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m. weekdays and until 3 a.m. Fridays and Saturdays. The city’s Alcoholic Beverage Control Board has scheduled a hearing for Dec. 20 on the matter.

But elected members of the Advisory Neighborhood Commission in Ward 5 which represents the area are opposing the move.

William C. Shelton, commission chairman, aid he has nothing against the club itself, but that the he opposes any strip clubs moving into the area which is undergoing redevelopment.

A spokesman for the Times, said the newspaper opposes the strip club’s relocation on the grounds that it would undermine development efforts along New York Avenue.
