Man Executed for Killing Strip Club Manager in Miami

A man who was convicted of murdering a topless bar manager at a strip club 27 years ago was executed by lethal injection Wednesday, according to a published report.

Angel Nievez Diaz was executed for the murder of Joseph Nagy, manager of the Velvet Swing Lounge in Miami, the Bradenton Herald reported. According to reports, there were no eyewitnesses to the shooting, and most of the club's employees and patrons were locked in a restroom, which the robbers blocked with a cigarette machine.

The case remained unsolved for four years until 1983, when Diaz's girlfriend told police he was involved in the crimes.

At Diaz's trial, he conducted his own defense, with the assistance of an attorney, but was convicted. Toro cut a deal with prosecutors and was sentenced to life in prison.

Diaz's jury recommended he be sentenced to death by an 8-4 vote.

Greg Smith, a Miami-Dade police detective, the lead investigator in the case, told the Bradenton Herald of Diaz, "The death penalty was made for people like him. He was a pretty bad guy."
