Interview: Angela White Loves Women, Men .... and Porn

MELBOURNE, Australia—It wasn't too long ago that the U.S. adult industry's relationship with Australia was, for want of a better word, adversarial. Back in the 1990s, when few adult producers were shipping their videotapes Down Under, only a couple of the country's six states—the Northern Territory and the Australian Capital Territory—allowed sexually explicit material to be sold at all, and that had to be by mail order, and even in those, piracy was rife.

But times change, and now shops in all states sell XXX product (they refer to it as "X18+"), even though it remains illegal, and there are few busts to stem the availability. Then, in 2000, the internet saw the launch of AbbyWinters.com, a paysite featuring girl/girl and solo action mainly from Australian beauties and newbies, that's since expanded into DVD production and widened its talent pool—and moved its base of operations to the Netherlands, in part because of increasing censorship from Australia's conservative federal government.

And then came Angela White.

"The first company I worked with was The Score Group, because obviously I have these big natural breasts and they specialize in that, so I did some solo sets for them," White recalled. "My first DVD, which was a solo showcase, A Day With Angela White, came out in 2003, and I was like, 'I really want to do girls,' but they wanted to see what I was like first—but the next time I shot with them, they were like, 'All right, here you go; here's some girls.'"

White spent the next eight years doing solo and girl/girl scenes and movies for both Score Group and Abby Winters, even as she was completing her degree and honors in gender studies ("Women's studies is what you call it in the U.S.") at the University of Melbourne—and then, she decided, it was time.

"I was eight years in the industry of just solo and girl/girl shooting, and then everyone's like, 'What happened? Why did you suddenly make the leap?'" she recounted of her entry into the world of boy/girl scenes. "I don't know if it is much of a leap; for me, it was just the right timing. I had just finished my degree  and I was at a transition point. I'm like, 'Okay, I've finished the university; what do I want to do now?' And I started thinking about boy/girl and it started being the thing that I would masturbate to, and I was thinking about it, and I decided there was nothing I was thinking that would stop me.

"I always go with my gut feeling," she explained. "If someone says, 'Do you want to do this?' and there's even a little part of me that goes, 'Hmmm, I don't think so,' then I'm like, 'Okay, that's not the right thing for me.' But if someone says, 'Do you want to do something,' and I'm like, 'Fuck yes!' and I say to myself, 'Is there any reason why I wouldn't want to do this,' and I can't think of one, then I'm like, 'Yeah, it's the right decision.' It got to the point where, prior to that, there were little niggly things, like 'Maybe I shouldn't do that,' or 'Maybe there's some reason why I shouldn't do boy/girl,' and then I got to that point after I finished shooting where I was like, 'I can't think of a reason why I wouldn't, and I want to do it, so let's go!'"

And "go," she did—all the way to Los Angeles, what with Australian laws regarding shooting and distributing XXX material "a bit gray," she said.

"If you want to produce a lot of content like I do through DVD production for my website, there's just not the talent base in Australia," she explained. "That's not even getting into the fact that there's not even location services that you can use. We don't have as big a mainstream film industry there either, and we have a very high minimum wage as well. Obviously, people come to adult for so many different reasons. I'm in it because I love sex, but others are in it for the money or other reasons, but they come into adult, and the money really isn't worth it because, first of all, there's not much work, and also because when you come into adult there's a stigma associated with it, so there needs to be a reason that would overcome the stigma, I guess."

White's bisexual, though she'd prefer to describe herself as "sapiosexual"—"I'm attracted to intellect. I love intelligent people. I love people I can have an intelligent conversation with, but if we have to put me in a little box, I guess I'd say I'm bisexual, yeah; I can go with that."—so one of the things that stopped her from performing hetero sex on camera for so long was a worry that producers would stop offering her girl/girl work.

"Before I was shooting for myself, one of the reasons I didn't do boy/girl straight-away was I was like, 'Once I do boy/girl, are companies going to book me for girl/girl?'" she said. "I love women. I don't want to start taking cock on camera and then people are like, 'Okay, got you; hardcore hardcore hardcore with boy/girl; don't worry about the girl/girl stuff anymore.' That would have been horrible, but I was worried about that, and at that point, I didn't have my own website, so now, I make my own destiny. I'm like, 'Who do I want to shoot with? I want to have you all to myself; I want to have you with another guy'—now I get to have that freedom, but before, I was worried that once I started doing boy/girl, no one would be interested in seeing me eat pussy, and I very much want to continue eating pussy.

"I'm so grateful that Moose took me on with Girlfriends Films," she added, "because before, I was releasing my content on AngelaWhite.com, but now I'm reaching a far bigger audience with my DVD releases and I'm really happy with how it's been going, so thank you, Girlfriends Films."

In fact, after attending the Adult Entertainment Expo and AVN Awards for several years, 2015 was the first year she worked a booth, and of course, it was Girlfriends Films'—and she also did a stint at Fleshlight's.

"I was quite excited to become the first Australian Fleshlight girl—mine came out in October of last year—so that was exciting, and then obviously being part of the Fleshlight team is so much fun; they're great people to be involved with; they really treat you as part of the family," White said. "Sales are great, and it's another way that I can offer my fans to become intimate with me, to get closer to me, and because I do webcam shows through my website, my fans are able to use the Fleshlight to imagine that they're fucking me. When I have time, when I'm not producing or editing, I log on to see my fans, and it's  another way for me to have fun with them as well, because if we do cam-to-cam, then I can actually see them fucking my Fleshlight and I can talk to them and ask them how it feels and tell them how to use it."

But White is especially excited about her distribution deal with Girlfriends Films, which she credits with really getting her work into the public eye—and she's got some great stuff releasing soon.

"About to come out is Angela Loves Men, and straight after that will be Angela Loves Threesomes," she said. "Angela Loves Men showcases four of my favorite one-on-one sessions with male talent. One of them is my scene with Ramon Nomar, which was the first time I squirted, ever, on or off camera, so that's really intense. I think he's amazing; a completely underrated talent. He always brings a lot of passion to set, always brings his A game, so I'm really on Team Ramon. The other scenes, one is with Danny Mountain. It's very erotic; he very much worships me head to toe, which I enjoyed. Then there's the scene with Manuel Ferrara, which is really intense. He really doesn't do much stuff where he's dominated, but it's a switch scene, so he starts off submissive, collared on a leash, and I basically tell him at the start of the scene, 'When you have this collar on, I'm in control of you. I tell you what to do. You're going to worship me, obey my every command—but when the collar comes off, it's your turn.' I definitely told him I was going to make myself cum on his cock, and he just had to sit there and let me use him the way I wanted to, and he gave as good as he took when they collar came off. The other scene on that DVD is with Toni Ribas, which—ohmigosh, he's so amazing and intense when he fucks and I squirt everywhere, and we end up in this sweaty mess on the floor, rolling around in my squirt, super-dirty, like wow, it's intense."

At least part of the reason why White is so excited about her squirting in Angela Loves Men, which will release on August 10, is that she'd never done it before.

"I didn't know that I could squirt; I didn't know that was in me, and you can actually see, the camera pans up to my face after Ramon made me squirt for the first time, and you can see, it's just utter confusion," White related. "I'm like 'What just happened? I can't believe that came out of me, that Ramon brought this out of me,' and he made me squirt twice, and both times, when the camera plans up to my face, both times I look disoriented. I'm like, 'What has happened?'"

But if squirting is one of the selling points for Angela Loves Men, fans will definitely want to try the smorgasbrod that's Angela Loves Threesomes, which will release on July 27.

"I think that's going to be highly anticipated because it's kind of got a bit of everything. It's got IR, it's got anal, and in it is my second DP," she detailed. "It's got a threesome with Flash Brown and Kagney Linn Karter; it's got a threesome with Jada Stevens and Prince Yahshua; it's got a threesome with Bonnie Rotten and Erik Everhard, which is a crazy anal squirting scene—you know when you've got Bonnie Rotten, it's going to be intense—and it's got a threeway with James Deen and Danny Mountain."

But one of the things her contract with Girlfriends has allowed her to do, both physically and mentally, is to expand her horizons. For one thing, she'd like to shoot at least one DVD in Europe, and while she considers that "an idea that will flesh out at some point," she's already taken the plunge into Japanese porn.

"I said, 'I want to shoot in Japan,' and that ended up happening a few weeks ago," White related. "That was really interesting, because they definitely have a different style of fucking. It's far more focused on the erotic and sensuality rather than just the mechanics of sex, which I really enjoyed.

"For me, it's fascinating, because I did my entire thesis on gender studies, and I focused on pornography, so I'm constantly analyzing gender relations, and the gender relations in Japanese porn are very different," she reported. "I feel like there's a broad mix in U.S. porn, where sometimes you see the female as dominant, sometimes she's submissive, but in Japan, they do like their women submissive to the point where even their makeup is done in an attempt to make the women look more submissive. So the first day of makeup, they had done the wings [ends] of the eyeliner downwards, which made me look kind of sad and maybe a little tired. So the next time, I said, 'Could you wing up?' which is how I'm used to and how I like my makeup to look, and the makeup artist did speak a bit of English, so I asked him, 'Could you explain what's with the down?' He said, 'Well, in Japanese culture, at least in Japanese AB, they like the women to look more submissive, not as strong,' and it does make sense: Wings that go up do make a woman look quite strong and perhaps more aggressive, so I was like, 'Okay, I accept that.' Even though, having been a feminist and studying gender politics, I don't want a world where women are always submissive, but I did want to immerse myself in like the Japanese AB culture, so I was like, 'You know what? Do the submissive eyes; let's do this. I want to see what it's like to play that submissive role.'"

Interestingly, however, once she got into the scene, White was surprised at how tame it was—and then they asked her if she'd like to try a "soft rape scene."

"So I was like, 'What's soft rape compared to like hard rape?'" she mused. "But I was like, 'You know what? I'm not going to get the opportunity to do a rape scene in another country because it's considered illegal, and I have rape fantasies, so yeah, I want to do it.'

"It was great to be able to go, 'Rape me. Go. Just do what you want and I can put my hands up and do nothing'," she recounted. "It went really well, but the funniest thing was that I found that a Japanese rape scene is softer than your average gonzo scene in L.A.. The way he was spanking me, I was like, 'Ohmigod, it's really soft and cute! You can go harder than that,' but they didn't feel the need or didn't want to, so I was like, 'Okay.' That was a lot of fun.'

"A lot of feminists seem to have rape fantasies," she added. "I think it might have something to do with the fact that feminists are very strong women, and so the fantasy of being submissive, being taken and giving up power and being like, 'Okay, I'm going to submit to this pleasure,' I think that's what's hot about it."

For some reason, this memory sparked a discussion of BDSM, and guess what? She's into it—more or less.

"I have never really done a scene where I truly submitted to another person's desires," White admitted. "I did a BD sex scene where I was tied up with James Deen, and for some reason, because it was my own production, I feel like I did submit, but not like I would if it were on someone else's set because I'm still making sure I'm thinking about what's happening in the scene.

"But I'm still exploring BDSM myself, so I definitely learned a lot when I did the BDSM scene with James," she said. "I didn't use my safe word, and I felt at certain points that I should have, so that's my fault, not anything to do with James. James was amazing, but I don't know if it was that I wanted to prove something or—you don't really know what's going on in your mind. It's like there were certain parts where after the fact I was like, 'Maybe I should have used my safe word,' but nothing went wrong. It was a little bit harder. What I think I learned from that is that what I like is, I really like psychological domination, so I like pain but I'm not a pain slut as they call it. I don't want to be brutalized, I don't want to be bruised and welted, but I do want to be fucked, I want to be slapped hard, I do want to be choked; I do want those things. So I kind of learned where my lines are. I think that what I want to focus on when I do my BDSM scenes in the future is that I want to be psychologically dominated and still some pain, but not as much."

Finally, White expressed a feeling that we've heard from many adult stars and directors over the years: Porn has changed her personal sexuality.

"What's been amazing for me being in pornography is that there are certain things I've done in porn that have made me think about my sexuality in ways that I never would have if I had never been involved in pornography," she admitted. "I mean, I had done anal in my private life and I enjoyed it, but I never really thought, 'I want to see how far I can stretch my asshole.' I've thought about those things and I've gotten off to the idea of that, whereas before, I never exposed myself to those kinds of things. Even what I do in my private life has expanded because of the things that I've learned on set, so it's been wholly positive."

How so?

"I'm polyamorous; that's how I identify in terms of relationships, so at the moment, I have a partner and I have a couple of lovers," she stated. "I'm not  the monogamous marrying kind. I'm not part of the swinger community; it's just in my private life. I do like to have sex with a  lot of people, but I'm so busy that it seems as if I get more sex on set now than I do in my private life—but at least I have really good sex on set, so I can't really complain."

And guess what? Neither can her fans!
