Industry Vet Urban Takes the Clean Road

It hasn’t been a bump-free ride for sales rep/distributor Dusty Urban, but, after weathering 23 years in the adult industry and some fairly rough personal issues, he’s back in the pink. And working in pink, to be exact. He’s been involved with sales, distribution and, for three years, owned the retail adult outlet Trespass Video and Entertainment in Chatsworth.

Urban began his porn career (along with Kevin Beechum) back in 1983 at Visual Entertainment, “selling videos for $55 and $60,” he said of those ancient, high-dollar years. “The first title we had was Taboo 2; those were the days. I went to Arrow Films with Kevin Beechum, then he opened K-Beech in 1987. I was doing sales, and I was sales manager, I had a phone room with 22 people in it. We could really move some product.”

Urban had known Kevin Beechum since they were junior high school chums back in Michigan. The relationship has paid off, despite a falling out in 2001.

“In 1992 we started Midnight Film and Video,” said Urban. “We became a manufacturer; we were a one-stop selling general release. Kevin came to me and asked if I wanted to be sales manager or be a rep, and I decided to rep. That’s when my drinking and drug abuse really escalated,” continued Urban. “He put me in his own big office so he could keep an eye on me. He put a desk by the bar, but I drank the bar dry. I filled the bottles up with water. He came in one night with some girl, and they were drinking and drinking and not getting drunk.”

After a rehab stint, Urban stayed sober for almost 10 years. After being put on prescribed meds, Urban became reacquainted with his monkey.

“It just escalated into alcohol and cocaine and methamphetamine abuse,” Urban admitted. “I went to jail four times in two years, I almost lost my house, I had liens, and I was running from the cops.” On Jan. 12, 2004, he checked into a rehab facility called New Beginnings in Waverly, Minn. After a four month stay and a sober stint working on Mount Baldy, he returned to work with Beechum in mid-January of last year.

“I worked in the warehouse, then got back on the phone in February,” said Urban. “I’m doing great. People have seen that I’m clean and sober, and I’m getting their trust back. I’m with K-Beech, but my side is called Urban Attractions. I sell all different lines and have about 16 now. I have about 50 titles and release one a week.”

A dedicated 12 Stepper, Urban is more than willing to lend a hand to others who may be experiencing the problems he’s dealt with.

“What’s in my future? Stay sober, stay here and do the right thing. I don’t mind if anyone ever wants to call and talk to me about their substance problems. Sometimes people just don’t know who to call.”
