Hustler Strip Club Proposal Shot Down

The City Council said Wednesday that it won't reconsider its rejection of a license transfer that would have allowed a Hustler strip club to open in downtown Detroit, according to a recently published report.

In November, the council voted 5-3 against the transfer, and President Pro Tem Monica Conyers told a packed council auditorium Wednesday morning she decided against reconsidering her vote, reported The Detroit News.

According to the report, the establishment's owners, HDV-Greektown LLC, want to open the strip club and have a federal lawsuit pending against Detroit that claims it's illegal to halt transfer of the entertainment and topless activity license.

The first request for a transfer by HDV-Greektown LLC came in June of 2003, but the council refused to act on the request. If the council approves the transfer, the state would still need to approve it as well. Legal representation for the strip club owners said the club, which could potentially be one of the largest in the state, could open by early 2008.
