2011 6th Annual Feminist Porn Awards Winners Announced

TORONTO—The sixth annual Feminist Porn Awards ceremony took place Friday night at Berkeley Heritage Events Venue in Toronto. According to Xtra.ca, which was on the scene, the event was marked by its determination to expand the way people think about masculinity in both feminism and porn.

“The night featured a menu of porn that went further, harder, deeper and faster than ever before,” wrote Regan McClure for the site. “An erotic eye for masculinity was on the agenda in a bigger way and, as you’d expect from feminist pornographers, that move is part of a broader push to shake up the porn establishment.”

McClure spotlighted Shine Louise Houston, the creator of the dyke series crashpad, who won an award for Honored Website for her new site, heavenlyspire, which features male performers in videotaped couples and solo scenes. Houston said the site was a selfish endeavor, explaining, “I really just wanted to explore my own fascination with cock.”

McClure also spoke with Drew Deveaux, winner of the FPA heartthrob award, who told her she wanted to see more Feminist Porn Award categories that “acknowledge feminist subjectivity with respect to gay male porn.”

She added, “The bedroom is the last frontier of social justice. There are many genres of porn where people are making hotter and more realistic depictions of sex. That’s in gay male, mainstream and t-girl porn too.”

McClure also spoke with genderqueer porn star Jiz Lee, who expects to see more masculinity rather than less in feminist porn.

“Trans men are respected as men and included in gay porn and masculine representations ... but feminist porn isn’t about getting people to identify as feminists; it’s letting people see how these values reflect their own,” Lee told McClure.

Perhaps it all just speaks to an ever-evolving (i.e. elusive) definition of what it means to be a feminist, if one definition could ever fit the bill.

“Mixing in trans men, trans women, genderqueer performers and a whole lot of dick, ass, pussy, mouth, sex toys and imagination is a whirlwind determined to redefine your ho-hum porn experience,” McClure wrote, concluding, “and there’s plenty more where that came from.”
