2008 Sex & Entertainment Expo Opens in Mexico City

MEXICO CITY - The fifth annual Sex & Entertainment Expo kicked off yesterday at Mexico City's vast Palacio de Los Deportes. The festival runs through Monday, Feb. 18.

According the San Antonio Express-News, the turnout for the expo is expected to rival the Super Bowl with approximately 100,000 attendees, reflecting "a new thirst for well-lighted, open places where people can discuss sex free of the confines of a conservative society."

Said one attendee, 23-year-old Lizbeth Martinez, "It was a subject we could not even touch at home. I learned from my friends. People are scared to talk about it."

The turnout is even more impressive when one considers the $14 ticket price, given that minimum wage in the country is about 65 cents an hour.

The event is seen as a tremendous means for broadening both the attitudes and the knowledge of locals about sex.

"The problem is the population does not have basic sexual education," said Mexico City sociologist Roberto Bermudez. "It is very limited; there are many taboos."

By attending events like the Expo, Bermudez said, "They can analyze and not be scared. They can learn about their sexuality."

In addition to exhibitors offering adult DVDs, lingerie, lubes, books, toys, artwork, dating services, tattooing and other sex-related paraphernalia, XXX stars including Gianna Lynn, Jenny Hendrix, Stephanie Swift, Monica Mayhem, Shayla LaVeaux, Gianna Michaels and Brooke Haven are signing. The expo also reportedly features live sex shows, a la European conventions.
