City Tentatively Approves Sex Shop Restrictions

The Greenwood City Council on Monday tentatively approved an ordinance aimed at blocking the opening of a proposed novelty store that would also sell some adult items on the city’s Main Street.

The measure was approved at its first reading and would be formally adopted during a second reading at an upcoming meeting, the Indianapolis Star reported.

The council tentatively approved the measure that would prohibit the sale of adult items from within 1,000 feet of any school, park or public facility. The action came after Mayor Charles Henderson promised to amend a city ordinance regulating adult businesses after the city learned a MeYummy’s novelty store would be opening in the city’s Olde Town area on Dec. 1.

Michelle Koontz, the owner of the proposed store, told the council that she and others were offended at its actions against her store, saying that while council members may not want to shop at her store, that some of their friends and others would and that they should be allowed to do so.

Marge Buford, the owner of the building where the shop is scheduled to open, assured the council that the store would not be offensive.

Police chief Joe Pitcher said the issue is about “quality of life issues” in the community.
