VENICE, Calif.—Fleshbot recently interviewed AVN Award-winning director Dana Vespoli.
Titled “Dana Vespoli’s Rubber Fist of Defiance,” the piece opens up with this description of Vespolir: "Describing Dana Vespoli as just a pornographer is like labeling Andy Warhol as just a silkscreen printer. She defies definition. Vespoli is a shy subversive, a feminist shunned by feminists, a reclusive porn revolutionist."
The piece examines where porn is today and how someone like her—shooting off the tracks to create niche content with nearly every movie released through her production company—can exist in an industry seemingly being strangled by pirating, budget restraints and fierce competition.
Dana, however, struggles less with direct competition than with finding her audience. Her relationship with Evil Angel has given her the opportunity to search for and find those who connect with her movies. Of course, it’s an ongoing relationship and there is no predicting where the still-young director may take her audience in the future.
“I have a tendency to go really far sometimes,” Dana said. “I am subversive. I don’t know how else to be. And if I go too far, too hard, it can alienate people. It’s a marriage of art and commerce. I feel like if we are going to do femdom, let’s do femdom. Let’s go as far as we can, but that alienates a lot of people because a lot of fans of femdom are new to it. They don’t want to get scared away. I made two more Fluid movies and I also paid attention to certain things that have been doing well. Incest themes. Older/younger themes. I just put my own spin on those, like I did, My Evil Step Mom Fucked My Ass. It’s a little humorous. It tells you what it is. It fits with Evil. It is anal-based. It is creepy. I have to be creepy. I’m still figuring out my footing and finding what works.”
Dana Vespoli’s Real Sex Diary 2 (Dana Vespoli/Evil Angel) releases this week. The movie, the second volume of the series that looks at her private sex life, features Ava Dalush, Sara Luvv, Logan Pierce, Ramon Nomar, Tyler Nixon and Dana.
